Gullwing Enmeshes Tradition With Modernity

The first impression is astonishing. The icon has lost none of its timeless quality – the car remains as measured as ever. But there’s now an unmistakable subliminal resonance of modernity. Just a handful of people were responsible for the design back then. The car is the symbol and heart of the entire brand. The gullwing design is larger than the sum of the parts, but a few features do deserve mention: the spaceframe chasis on which the vehicle was built was light years ahead, rakish windshield, the large round headlamps, the slope of the roof line, engine performance and the powerful rear – have the makings of an intimate design object. It looks at least as familiar as the famous Coca-Cola bottle. This first post war Mercedes Benz embodies a wonderful balance between tradition and modernity, between pure theory and the urgency of progress. The Gullwing is in many ways a classic car that feels like a modern automobile.
